WFUNA and 14 UNAs Attend 2024 United Nations Civil Society Conference

WFUNA and the 14 UNAs added their voices to ensure that civil society influences global policymaking at the upcoming Summit of the Future and in the final version of the Pact for the Future.

The 2024 United Nations Civil Society Conference was held in Nairobi on May 9-10 and made history as the first-ever of the kind held in Africa. Its theme was the ‘Summit of the Future’ and its outcomes will serve as a contribution for Member States as they work towards the drafting and negotiation of the Pact for the Future.

Over the two days of the event more than 2000 participants took part in briefings, interactive dialogues and more than 30 workshops. In the 20 civil society generated multi-stakeholder “ImPACT Coalitions” that were formed, engaged participants advanced on key reform initiatives leading up to and beyond the Summit of the Future.

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who attended the closing session, declared that he witnessed the enormous impact of civil society in every corner of the world and declared to all CSOs present: “Keep working with us to build a better world”.

WFUNA and the 14 UNAs present at the event, with an expertise of more than 78 years working for the promotion of the UN values, added their voices to those of the other CSOs to ensure that civil society influences global policymaking at the Summit of the Future and in the final version of the Pact for the Future.

The common position of UNAs Participating to the Conference can be found here.

Heading towards the Summit of the Future and as we continue to strive for larger and better Civil Society participation in shaping the UN we need, let us build on the momentum generated by the historic UN Civil Society Conference in Nairobi and hope that the “bold and honest” conversations that Mithika Mwenda, of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance called for, take place and drive us forward towards a reinvigorated multilateralism. In the words of the Conference’s co-chair Nudhara Yusuf let us not forget that “we cannot do the same that we have always done and expect new results”.

The outcomes and recommendations will be presented in the “Impact for the Future Outcome Package” on the 30 of May 2024 in New York.
