WFUNA Delivered 12 Youth and Advanced Training Programs at the UN

During the period of 15th January- 15th March 2024, WFUNA held 12 Youth and Advanced Training Programs at the United Nations in Geneva and Vienna.

Marking the outset of the Education and Training activities for 2024, a total of 369 high school and university students took part in the WFUNA training programs at the United Nations Offices in Geneva and Vienna between 15 January and 15 March 2024. The programs were held in partnership with ThinkBank China and Athens College.

With the majority being university students, WFUNA welcomed student participants from 15 to 23 years old, coming from China and Greece, from a diverse range of academic disciplines, such as social sciences, law, engineering, and architecture.

Throughout the programs, student participants on boarded on a learning journey to deepen their understanding of the United Nations system and the international organizations’ ecosystem, and to gain 21st century practical skills, around the fields of international affairs, multilateral diplomacy, and sustainable development.

Students engaged with experts and professionals from the United Nations and international organizations, and they practiced their knowledge and skills in workshops, model UN simulations, visits to organizations, and interactive sessions. Through these activities, the participants applied their learnings in real-world SDGs’ challenges and scenarios, addressing pressing issues, such as climate change, inequitable access to health, and gender inequality.

The participants discovered different aspects of the UN work, including human rights, trade, cybersecurity, standards, telecommunication, and environment, through engaging discussions and presentations by experts from specialized UN agencies such as the World Health Organization (WHO), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), as well as other UN bodies, initiatives and related organizations, like the World Trade Organization (WTO), the UN Global Compact, and CERN.

The winter season of the training programs was completed successfully with high engagement and enthusiasm demonstrated by the student participants. WFUNA shared the values of the United Nations with the next generation of leaders, fostering their interest in multilateral diplomacy, peace, justice, and sustainable development. As one participant expressed, the program was “a helpful and wonderful experience, offering an international platform to address the challenges facing the world”.
