During July and August 2024, WFUNA successfully conducted nine Youth and Advanced Training Programs at the United Nations’ headquarters in Geneva, Vienna, and New York. These week-long programs were organized in collaboration with different education partners and targeted more than 300 high school and university students.
The WFUNA Education and Training team facilitated an immersive learning experience by engaging experts and professionals from different entities and agencies. Among these were representatives from UNESCO, the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Trade Organization (WTO), and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). These experts shared insights into their work, highlighting the impact of the United Nations on global issues such as trade, humanitarian and refugee response, intellectual property, food security, and education.
Participants had the opportunity to explore a wide range of interconnected topics addressed by the United Nations, deepening their understanding through interactive simulations, guided tours, and visits to various UN organizations and diplomatic hubs. The programs also included comprehensive presentations on the United Nations system and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The culmination of each program saw students delivering high-quality debate presentations, where they proposed solutions to key global sustainable development challenges. The summer programs were marked by high engagement and enthusiasm from the participants, who left with a deeper appreciation of the United Nations’ values and a renewed commitment to multilateral cooperation, peace, justice, and sustainable development.
Reflecting on their experience, one participant noted, “The program is a great entry for students to deeply understand the daily work of the United Nations and is a wonderful learning experience.”
WFUNA remains committed to nurturing the next generation of global leaders by fostering their interest in international cooperation and the pursuit of sustainable development.
