Fifty-two student representatives from 24 universities across Korea participated in the fourteenth edition of WFUNA’s College Leaders at the UN Program. These students, selected by their respective universities, embarked on a journey to represent their institutions at the United Nations. The program began in May 2024, with participants engaging in workshops and training sessions focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The students were organized into six groups, comprising four policy recommendation teams and two international organization career teams. Each group delved into specific targets based on the three pillars of the SDGs: social, environmental, and economic. Their hard work culminated in a week-long visit to the UN Headquarters from August 12-16, where they had the opportunity to engage directly with experts and practitioners on the SDGs.
Throughout the program, panelists and speakers from various UN departments and agencies, UN Missions, civil society, academia, and local government shared their expertise. Notable organizations included the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), UN Global Compact (UNGC), UN Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs (UN DPPA), UN Department of Global Communications (UN DGC), and UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA).
In addition to attending panels, the students presented their policy recommendations to an audience that included members and panelists from various UN departments and international organizations. They also enjoyed exclusive experiences such as the UN Garden Tour, typically restricted to authorized personnel. Over the course of the four-month program, these students deepened their understanding of global agendas and gained valuable experience in formulating policy recommendations, which served as inspiration for their future pursuits in international organizations.
