WFUNA’s Advanced Training at the UN: Korea

NEW YORK AND GENEVA – For the second time, forty students from Sookmyung Women’s University in Seoul, Korea, took part in WFUNA’s Advanced Training Program at the UN: Korea, which was run in parallel in both Geneva and New York from 5-9 August 2013.

Palais des Nations, Geneva

It has been a busy and intensive week for 20 students from the Sookmyung Women’s University, which were welcomed in Geneva by WFUNA staff to take part in our Advanced Training Program at the UN: Korea. The program kicked off on August 5th with an overview of the work of the UN and of the UN Offices at Geneva. A briefing from the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea at the UN resulted in a great opportunity for the students to gain a valuable insight on the work of the Mission.

During the following four days, participants learned about the role, objectives and activities of different international organizations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Red Crescent, the International Trade Centre , the International Telecommunication Union, and many others.  Additionally, students took part in a day-long focus session on International Humanitarian and Human Rights Law. The week ended with presentations by the participants on a critical analysis of the UN and other International Organizations.

UN Headquarters, New York

Twenty students from Sookmyung Women’s University came to New York to take part in the Advanced Training at the UN: Korea program for one week. During the first day, the group received a guided tour of the United Nations and its various chambers. Students visited the Permanent Missions to the United Nations of both the United States and the Republic of Korea. Briefings from UN officials focused on human rights, disarmament, and the environment. Participants also attended the 12th Youth Assembly at the United Nations, listening to inspiring presentations from UN officials and civil society, while meeting youth leaders from around the world. To finish the week, WFUNA trainers led career and project management workshops. These seminars introduced valuable skills for both the 21st century job search and workplace for careers in international organizations.
