Howard University, founded in 1867 and known for its history of activism and social change, has partnered with the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA). This partnership unites two purpose-driven entities with a mission to shape future leaders in global diplomacy and international cooperation while providing students with an opportunity to get involved with UN issues and learn about the importance of multilateralism.
Rubin Patterson, Dean of the College of Arts and Science at Howard, says the following about the partnership:
“Howard University is thrilled to be partnering with the World Federations of United Nations Associations on behalf of our students. WFUNA has a sterling reputation in preparing students to take up leadership positions in programs and activities that address and pursue global challenges and opportunities. The College of Arts and Sciences educates its students with the understanding that we are preparing global leaders. Our partnership with WFUNA is in furtherance of that goal.”
Kickstarting the new partnership, students from disciplines of History, Sociology and Political Science traveled from Washington D.C. to New York for an immersive, week-long experience. During this time, students participated in sessions with experts from organizations such as UNODA, IAEA, UNODC, UNICEF, UNAOC, OIOS, UNU-CPR, and insights from NYU. During live simulations, they stepped into the roles of diplomats, addressing critical issues like climate change, while navigating competing interests and priorities. These hands-on experiences emphasized the complexities of international negotiations and the importance of collaboration.
A Week of Learning and Global Engagement
The Training Program at the UN emphasized the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), encouraging students to critically assess their role in addressing global challenges and develop comprehensive proposals for change. Additionally, networking with key UN professionals and organizations in New York City offered a valuable opportunity to explore potential career paths in international diplomacy and other impactful professions in the field.
Energized and highly engaged, the students came prepared to learn and left ready to contribute to a more inclusive and sustainable world, proving that the future of diplomacy and global cooperation is in capable hands. With the mission of creating ‘multipliers’ around the world who protect and promote the values of the UN, WFUNA calls on these select Howard University students to continue being examples of Global Citizens to those around them.
