The Role of Global Citizenship Education in the 2030 Agenda

The Role of Global Citizenship Education in the 2030 Agenda

The Role of Global Citizenship Education in the 2030 Agenda

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 21, 2017

On Monday, 19 June 2017, WFUNA co-organized a seminar at the United Nations Headquarters in New York entitled “The Role of Global Citizenship Education in the 2030 Agenda and Beyond” with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Korea, the Permanent Mission of the State of Qatar and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Centre for International Understanding (APCEIU).

The central question of the seminar was, “How does global citizenship education (SDG Target 4.7) contribute to the values and vision of the United Nations?” The seminar highlighted key dimensions of global citizenship education (GCED) in line with UN agendas and explored opportunities for GCED to enhance and advance progress toward realizing these agendas through discussion among different stakeholders.

Representatives of all four of the seminar co-organizers shared remarks, including His Excellency Ambassador Cho Tae-Yul, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, Mr. Abdulrahman Al-Hamadi, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations, Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, Secretary-General of WFUNA and Dr. Chung Utak, Director of APCEIU. Madame Irina Bokova, Director-General of UNESCO, also prepared a special video message for the seminar, which was shown as part of the opening remarks.

Following the opening remarks, Professor Moon Chung-In, Special Advisor to the ROK President for Unification, Foreign and Security Affairs and distinguished University Professor of Yonsei University delivered the keynote speech.

The second part of the seminar was a panel moderated by His Excellency Ambassador Hahn Choong-Hee, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations. The panel included:

  • Dr. Karen Bryner, Director of the Education A Child (EAC) Technical Department, Education Above All
  • Ms. Lily Gray, Liaison Officer at UNESCO New York Office
  • Professor Han Kyung-Koo, Seoul National University
  • Mareike Hachemer, Secondary School Teacher, Delegate of the International Department at the Ministry of Education in Hesse, Germany and Member of the @TeachSDGs Global Goals Educator Task Force
  • Theresa Ridings, Student in Lehigh University’s Global Citizenship Program

His Excellency Ambassador Hahn Choong-Hee made the final remarks to close the seminar. A recording of the full GCED seminar can be accessed on UN WebTV here. A Twitter recap can be scrolled through here.
