NEW YORK, NY – In recognition of the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, Bonian Golmohammadi, Secretary-General of WFUNA, and Lakshmi Puri, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, met to sign a partnership agreement between their two organizations. Both parties committed to working together to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 5: Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls of the UN’s Sustainable Development Agenda.
Ms. Puri commented: “We welcome this partnership with WFUNA as they join us in ensuring the realization of SDG 5 on achieving Gender Equality and the empowerment of all women and girls, and the gender responsive implementation of Agenda 2030 through the strengthened participation of young women and young men in achieving Planet 50-50 by 2030.”
The two organizations will work together to promote human rights, leadership, and political participation of women and girls; to take action to end violence against women; and to encourage men and boys to promote gender equality. To achieve these aims, WFUNA and UN Women will engage in joint programming, capacity development, campaigning, advocacy, research, data and knowledge management, and fundraising. The partnership is envisioned to engender the implementation of the SDGs and operate at the national, regional, and global levels, specifically in light of UN Women’s Youth and Gender Equality Strategy and its ‘LEAPs Framework.’
Mr. Golmohammadi expressed enthusiasm for the partnership: “We are excited to partner with UN Women, as we look forward to working together toward the implementation of Goal 5. Partnerships between the UN and civil society are fundamental to achieving gender equality, and we are happy to contribute to this aim.”
