Message from WFUNA Secretary-General on UN Day 2023

OCTOBER 24, 2023—WFUNA’s Secretary General, Aziel Philippos Goulandris, has issued the following statement on the occasion of UN Day 2023.

The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA), established in 1946, with over 100 members and thousands of constituents in all regions of the world, commemorates the ratification of the United Nations Charter that took place on 24 October 1945. WFUNA joins the United Nations to express a firm commitment to its founding ideals, goals and mission.

WFUNA reconfirms its vision that the United Nations is a powerful force in meeting common global challenges and opportunities. We remain dedicated to our mission of creating a better world by strengthening and enhancing the United Nations through the engagement of global citizens who share a global mindset and support international cooperation. We believe that people’s involvement in all levels of local, national, and global decision-making is essential to achieving the goals of the United Nations.

Our Federation’s members worldwide stand steadfast in advocating for the protection of human rights and the strengthening of multilateral relations and diplomacy to address global issues. We uphold the UN Charter’s affirmation, which declares,

“We the Peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of every human being, and in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small.”

We reiterate our commitment to working towards attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Agenda 2030 while fully aligning our efforts with Our Common Agenda as a vision for the future of international cooperation.

Throughout its existence, WFUNA has served as the unwavering voice of civil society in advancing the ideals of the United Nations. As we commemorate this UN Day, we issue a clarion call to all to work towards ensuring a world in which, in the words of the UDHR, the “recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice, and peace in the world.”
