NEW YORK, NY — WFUNA celebrated its 70th anniversary on August 2, 2016 at United Nations Headquarters in New York. WFUNA Secretary-General Bonian Golmohammadi brought a cake to meet with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon and Ambassador Sylvie Lucas of the Permanent Mission of Luxembourg to the UN.
WFUNA was founded in 1946 in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by 22 United Nations Associations who established the international organization in support of the ideals of the United Nations, with the belief that peoples’ involvement in all levels of local, national and global decision-making is essential in order to achieve the goals of the UN.
The group was joined by Edmond Mulet, Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary-General, in celebrating the milestone. They discussed the longstanding relationship between WFUNA and the UN, and Secretary-General Ban Ki Moon thanked the World Federation and all UNAs for their invaluble partnership and support of the UN.
With celebrations off to a good start, WFUNA will continue to mark the anniversary through the rest of the month with the WFUNA 70 Global Citizenship Challenge. Events are planned throughout the rest of the year as well; during the regular European UNAs meeting in Brussels in September, several UN Symphony Orchestra events in Seoul on UN Day, and an event in Luxembourg in October.
