On February 8th, 2023, WFUNA hosted the fifth UNSC Exit Briefing with the five countries leaving the United Nations Security Council after the 2021-2022 term. This briefing took place in-person at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, with a livestream viewing option available through UN Web TV.
The goal of these briefings is to provide a space for Ambassadors to share their experiences as elected members of the Council, reflect upon successes and challenges, and provide recommendations for the incoming “Elected 10”. This is a part of a series of initiatives that WFUNA organizes to increase transparency and civil society access to UN processes.

WFUNA’s Director, Mr. Aziel Philippos Goulandris, moderated the briefing with approximately 70 member states and civil society representatives in attendance.
Following opening remarks, a series of Question and Answer rounds from member states and civil society organizations provided for an interactive session. The dialogue concerned, among a variety of topics, the need for inclusion of developing countries within the UNSC, the impact of the veto power, the mechanics between the “Elected 10” and the “Permanent 5”, and the crucial role civil society plays in the work of the UNSC.

The Exit Briefings, held early in each calendar year, typically last two hours, featuring outgoing members of the UN Security Council, as well as other member states and civil society organizations. The Briefings are live streamed on UN WebTV, and live tweeted using the hashtag #UNSCExit. These options for virtual engagement provide civil society organizations not based in New York an opportunity to engage online and submit questions, further connecting UNSC Presidency-Civil Society Dialogues with wider networks.
