On April 20, 2022, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the forty-first meeting in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and representatives of civil society organizations. WFUNA’s CSO Dialogues aim to increase transparency and accountability as well as civil society access to important UN mechanisms.
This month’s dialogue featured H.E. Barbara Woodward, Permanent Representative of the UK to the UN and President of the UN Security Council for April 2022. WFUNA’s Secretary-General, Bonian Golmohammadi, moderated the briefing which was attended virtually by 82 civil society organizations. The event was also live broadcast on UN Web TV and participants could engage with the topics of discussion using the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres on Twitter.
Ambassador Woodward began the meeting by highlighting the value of civil society engagement in the work of the UN Security Council and outlining three of the top priorities for the UK during their presidency: accountability for Russia and support for Ukraine in the ongoing conflict, equitable global access to COVID-19 vaccines in countries and communities affected by conflict, and strengthening accountability for perpetrators of conflict-related sexual violence.
The floor was then opened to questions from representatives of civil society organizations. Ambassador Woodward answered country-specific questions relating to Ukraine, Yemen, Myanmar, Sudan, Ethiopia, as well as question on various topics including the role of civil society, prevention, accountability, Security Council structure, gender equality and protecting children in conflict.
