Civil Society Dialogue with Mozambique, President of the UN Security Council for May 2024

On May 31st, 2024, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the fifty fourth installment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations. The Dialogue was held in-person at United Nations Headquarters and broadcast live on UN Web TV for wider accessibility.

The dialogue featured H.E. Mr. Pedro Comissário Afonso, Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Mozambique to the UN and was moderated by Mr. William Yotive. The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.

Ambassador Afonso shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of May. He spoke about meetings scheduled for the month and focus areas, such as the protection of civilians in armed conflict, strengthening African states in addressing global security, and the Women and Youth Peace and Security Agenda (WPS and YPS).

The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations, inquiring on the arms embargo against South Sudan, the role of faith leaders in African peacebuilding, and the relationship between the YPS and WPS. In his commentary, the Ambassador stressed a united struggle between women and children, the importance of accurate representation in the WPS agenda, and the need for a common solution against global conflict. Ambassador Afonso further discussed the unique role of African states on the Council and closed the Dialogue with a note of encouragement to Civil Society, empowering them to continue to bring the most pressing issues to the attention of the Council to ensure that its agenda reflects not just the interests of the Council, but a diverse, broader audience.
