Civil Society Dialogue with Slovenia, President of the UN Security Council for September, 2024
On September 4, 2024, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the fifty-sixth instalment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations. The Dialogue was held in-person at United Nations Headquarters and broadcast live on UN Web TV for wider accessibility.
The dialogue featured H.E. Samuel Žbogar, Representative of the Permanent Mission of Slovenia to the Security Council, and was moderated by William Yotive. The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.
Ambassador Žbogar shared the Council’s programme of work for September. He spoke about meetings scheduled for the month and focus areas, underscoring the importance of restoring political will, strengthening the global order, and enacting gender equality. He also talked about rebuilding trust in the the Security Council and looking towards the future in the peacekeeping process in the Middle East.
The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations, inquiring on the Council’s plans for ending the Russia-Ukraine war, the Council’s actions regarding Haiti, and how Slovenia will reinforce its commitment to the Women, Peace and Security Agenda. In his commentary, the Ambassador discussed Slovenia’s intention to bring conflict prevention, the protection of civilians, and the interplay between climate and challenges to peace and security to the Council’s discussions. The Ambassador also discussed his hopes for the signature event for the month of September on peacekeeping where Slovenia will encourage a forward-looking approach.
