Civil Society Dialogue with the Republic of Sierra Leone, President of the UN Security Council for August 2024

On Friday, August 23rd, 2024, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the fifty fifth instalment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations. The Dialogue was held in-person at United Nations Headquarters and broadcast live on UN Web TV for wider accessibility.

The dialogue featured H.E. Michael Imran Kanu, Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Sierra Leone to the UN and was moderated by Mr. Bill Yotive. The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.

Ambassador Kanu shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of August. He spoke about meetings scheduled for the month and focus areas, underscoring the importance of bolstering peacebuilding initiatives, advancing the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) agenda through inclusive participation, and engaging in the historic debate on Council reform, particularly the push for a permanent seat for Africa on the Council.

The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations, inquiring on Sierra Leone’s global humanitarian priorities, the Council’s actions regarding Haiti, and the role of African member states in leading negotiations on resolutions. In his commentary, the Ambassador stressed addressing historical injustices, particularly in the context of African representation in UN Security Council reforms. Ambassador Kanu further discussed the need for increased “pen ownership” by African countries in drafting resolutions and the significance of the upcoming Pact for the Future as a crucial step towards recognizing Africa’s unique challenges. The Ambassador concluded the Dialogue by calling for sustained partnership and collaboration to achieve lasting global peace and security.
