Civil Society Dialogue with Switzerland’s President of the UN Security Council for October 2024
On October 4, WFUNA organized the fifty-seventh installment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations. The Dialogue was held in-person at United Nations Headquarters and broadcast live on UN Web TV for wider accessibility.
The dialogue featured H.E. Pascale Christine Baeriswyl, Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Switzerland to the UN, and was moderated by Aziel Goulandris, Secretary-General of WFUNA. The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.
Ambassador Baeriswyl shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of October. She spoke about meetings scheduled for the month and focus areas, such as the Council’s role in conflict prevention, addressing climate security, and protecting civilians.
The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations, inquiring on security in Colombia, violence in Myanmar, and addressing violations of the Geneva Conventions. In her commentary, the Ambassador stressed the importance of inclusion for all UNSC member states, wider UN membership, and civil society, noting that they will hear from 10 civil society briefers this month. In closing, Ambassador Baeriswyl discussed the goal of guiding the Council through troubled times and back towards diplomacy and open discussion.
