On February 3rd, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the twenty-third installment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations at the United Nations Headquarters.
The dialogue featured H.E. Mr. Marc Pecsteen de Buytswerve, Permanent Representative of Belgium to the UN, briefing civil society representatives on Belgium’s presidency of the Security Council for the month of February. WFUNA’s Secretary-General, Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, moderated the briefing, which was attended by almost 30 participants from UN-accredited civil society organizations.
The event was broadcast live on UN Web TV, and it was promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.
Ambassador Pecsteen de Buytswerve shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of February. He spoke about the Open Debates scheduled for February, including a debate on Peacebuilding and maintaining peace: Transitional justice in conflict and post-conflict situations. Ambassador Pecsteen de Buytswerve also emphasized that the Security Council plans to address the ongoing issues in Myanmar, Yemen, Syria and Somalia.
The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations on country specific questions relating to Israel, Palestine, Iran, Syria, DRC and Venezuela, as well as topics such as Youth, Peace and Security, Children in Armed Conflict, Civil Society Engagement in the SC, and Women, Peace and Security.
