UN Security Council 2023 Election Briefing Series

UNSC Election Briefing featuring all UN Security Council candidates seeking election for a non-permanent seat on the Council for the 2023-2024 term.

On the 15th and 16th of May 2023, WFUNA held a UNSC Election Briefing featuring all UN Security Council candidates seeking election for a non-permanent seat on the Council for the 2023-2024 term. The first event in this series, the Election Briefing, featured the ‘clean-slate’ candidates currently running unopposed, including Algeria, Sierra Leone, The Republic of Korea, and Guyana. The second event in this series, the Election Debate, included the contested candidate countries running for the Eastern European Group seat, being Slovenia and Belarus. The candidate countries were represented by the Permanent Representatives of all six Missions to the UN, being H.E. Mr. Amar Bendjama of Algeria, H.E. Mrs. Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana, H.E. Mr. Joonkook Hwang of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, and H.E. Mr. Alhaji Fanday Turay of Sierra Leone for the Briefing; and H.E. Mr. Valentin Rybakov of the Republic of Belarus and H.E. Mr. Boštjan Malovrh of the Republic of Slovenia for the Debate.

WFUNA’s Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. Aziel-Philippos Goulandris moderated the Briefing Series, which featured interventions and questions from both representatives of Member States and Civil Society Organizations, focusing on the candidates intentions and focus areas if elected to the Council, as well as global issues and concerns. The Election Briefing Series was held in-person at UNHQ in New York, and was attended over 100 Member and Observer States and Civil Society representatives.

The Election Briefing Series was also broadcast on UN Web TV for wider viewing, of which you may find a recording of the events here. The event was also live-tweeted and promoted on social media using the hashtag #UNSCElections. With the active engagement of Member States, UN Associations and Civil Society Organizations, the event received considerable attention, including coverage in Foreign Policy Magazine, and allowed for participation from a more global audience.
