Civil Society Dialogue with France, President of the UN Security Council for January 2024
On January 8th, 2024, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the fifty-second installment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations. The Dialogue was held in-person at United Nations Headquarters and broadcast live on UN Web TV for wider accessibility.
The dialogue featured H.E. Mr. Nicolas de Rivière, Permanent Representative of France to the UN. WFUNA’s Secretary General, Mr. Aziel Goulandris, moderated the briefing. The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.
Ambassador de Rivière shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of January. He spoke about meetings scheduled for the month, including focusing on Ukraine, the Middle East, and Sudan, as well as following the renewal of mandates for peacekeeping operations coming to an end, and noting the prioritization of major humanitarian crises.
The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations on topics such as increasing dialogue between CSOs and leadership, and encouraging Security Council unity. Towards the end of the Dialogue, Ambassador de Rivière noted the aim for the UNSC to insure all stakeholders are part of the discussion when it comes to global challenges, and to have diverse sources of information and listen to all views when examining a situation.
