On December 1, 2017, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) convened the eighth in a series of Civil Society Dialogues with the President of the United Nations Security Council at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

The dialogue featured H.E. Koro Bessho, Permanent Representative of Japan to the United Nations and President of the UN Security Council for the month of December. Ms. Margaret Williams, WFUNA’s Senior Peace and Security Officer, moderated the discussion that brought together over 30 UN-focused civil society representatives.

Ambassador Bessho highlighted Japan’s priorities for the month of December which include DPRK, increased awareness of danger of small arms in addition to weapons of mass destruction, and an open debate on international peace and security and complex conflict. He also emphasized the importance of transparency in UN processes. Ambassador Bessho then answered questions from CSO representatives on a wide range of topics including Security Council reform, the role of women and children in peacekeeping, North Korea, and Myanmar, among other issues.
