UN Department of Global Communications Collaborates with WFUNA to Launch Mini-Model UN Toolkit for United Nations Day

OCTOBER 23 2025 – NEW YORK — The United Nations Department of Global Communications (DGC) and the WFUNA announced today the launch of a new Model UN Mini-Simulation Toolkit to mark United Nations Day 2025 and the 80th anniversary of the UN Charter.

The toolkit, developed jointly by DGC’s Education Outreach Section and WFUNA, aims to make Model UN simulations more accessible, inclusive, and adaptable for schools, universities, and youth organizations worldwide. The first edition focuses on the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and the urgent issue of marine plastic litter and microplastics, a  challenge that affects communities and ecosystems across the planet.

Bringing the UN to Classrooms
Designed for use in classrooms or clubs, the toolkit allows educators to conduct a complete four-session simulation with minimal preparation. It includes:
Step-by-step guidance for teachers and facilitators
A sample zero-draft resolution for negotiation and amendment
A script for the President and Facilitator to use to preside over formal and informal meetings
Student worksheets and background information on UNEA and the UN system

“As we mark 80 years of the United Nations, this new Model UN toolkit empowers young people to step into the role of global leaders—cultivating diplomacy, negotiation, and consensus-building skills.” said Melissa
Fleming, Under-Secretary-General for Global Communications. “It teaches them that collaboration across borders is not just how the UN works – it’s how solutions to the most complex problems are found.”

The toolkit helps students understand how the UN makes decisions and why cooperation across countries matters,” said Aziel-Philippos Goulandris, Secretary-General of WFUNA. By simulating the United Nations
Environment Assembly, young people see how real-world challenges like plastic pollution are addressed through dialogue, negotiation, and consensus.”

Engaging Youth in Multilateralism
The toolkit builds on WFUNA’s long-standing collaboration with the United Nations to support Model UN conferences and clubs that promote accurate simulations and deepen youth understanding of multilateralism. It responds directly to the UN General Assembly’s 2023 resolution A/RES/77/336 recognizing Model UN as a valuable tool for diplomacy education and youth capacity-building.

The launch of this toolkit represents a shared commitment to empower youth as global citizens and future leaders,” William Yotive, Senior Education Officer of WFUNA added. It connects education to real UN
processes and supports teachers in making the values of the United Nations come alive in the classroom.”

Looking Ahead
The Model UN Mini-Simulation Toolkit is currently available in English, with plans to expand to additional UN official languages. Educators, students, and Model UN organizers can now access the full toolkit and accompanying materials.
