New York, NY — The World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) proudly concluded WIMUN New York 2026, welcoming more than 1,700 participants from 73 countries, marking both the largest WIMUN conference to date and the final conference under the WIMUN name.
Held in New York City — home to the United Nations Headquarters — this historic edition brought together young leaders, educators, and emerging diplomats from around the globe for an immersive and authentic United Nations simulation grounded in multilateralism, consensus-building, and real-world diplomacy.
A Powerful Opening at the United Nations
The conference officially commenced with a distinguished Opening Ceremony that underscored the importance of youth engagement in global governance.
Delegates were honored to hear an opening address by H.E. Allele Reid, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Permanent Mission of Jamaica to the United Nations. In her remarks, H.E. Reid reflected on the enduring value of diplomacy, the importance of inclusive multilateral dialogue, and the responsibility of emerging leaders to uphold the principles of the United Nations.
Participants also heard from Dr. Felipe Paullier, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, who emphasized the essential role of young people in shaping inclusive and sustainable global solutions.
WFUNA Secretary-General Mr. Aziel-Philippos Goulandris welcomed delegates from across the world, reaffirming WFUNA’s commitment to strengthening UN Associations globally and empowering the next generation of multilateral leaders.
Together, the speakers set the tone for a week defined by substance, professionalism, and meaningful collaboration.
UNA Side Event Explores Careers and the Future of Multilateralism
As part of the conference week, WFUNA, UNA-USA, UNA-Jamaica, and UNA-Georgia co-hosted three dedicated side events, including a joint session held on February 10 from 7:00 to 8:00 PM, creating space for deeper dialogue on careers in civil service and the evolving landscape of international cooperation.
Joined by WFUNA Secretary-General Mr. Aziel-Philippos Goulandris, the discussions explored pathways to working within the United Nations system, opportunities in national public service, and the broader future of internationalism and multilateral affairs.
Beyond career pathways, the events brought together youth from different countries and UNA networks to exchange ideas, build relationships, and strengthen their connection to the global UN Association movement. Delegates met like-minded peers committed to multilateral values, reinforcing the sense of belonging within a broader WFUNA community.
By convening UNA leaders and young participants in a shared space, the sessions showcased the importance of engaging in WIMUN as more than a simulation — but as an entry point into sustained civic participation, global advocacy, and long-term involvement within the UN ecosystem.
The discussions served as a meaningful bridge between simulation and reality, illustrating how experiences at WIMUN can translate into tangible pathways within the UN system, national civil service, and the global UNA movement.
Recognizing the WIMUN New York 2026 Secretariat
This landmark conference was made possible by a dedicated Secretariat of more than 50 team members, whose leadership, coordination, and commitment ensured the seamless delivery of the largest WIMUN conference in history.
Under the guidance of WIMUN NY 2026 Secretary-General Ms. Savannah Jamora, the Secretariat led months of preparation — from academic planning and simulation development to delegate engagement and conference operations.
Their collective work represents the excellence, discipline, and collaborative spirit that has defined WIMUN over the years.
A Historic Milestone — and a New Chapter Ahead
As WFUNA approaches its 80th Anniversary, WIMUN New York 2026 stands as both a culmination and a transition.
This conference marks the final edition of WIMUN, closing an important chapter in WFUNA’s history. Since its inception, WIMUN has provided tens of thousands of young people worldwide with an authentic, UN-aligned simulation experience that prioritizes realism, consensus-building, and diplomatic rigor.
While this edition concludes the WIMUN era, it also signals the beginning of a new phase in WFUNA’s Model UN programming — one that builds upon the legacy, lessons, and global community cultivated over the years. Further announcements regarding this next chapter will follow soon.
Closing Reflections from the United Nations
The conference concluded with inspiring remarks delivered on behalf of the Secretary-General of the United Nations by Mr. Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General.
In his address, Mr. Dujarric underscored the enduring importance of diplomacy, dialogue, and collective action in navigating global challenges, encouraging delegates to continue embodying the values of multilateralism beyond the General Assembly Hall.
The Closing Ceremony also featured remarks by H.E. Jorge Aranda, Chargé d’Affaires of the Permanent Mission of Portugal to the United Nations, who reflected on the importance of youth participation in multilateral spaces and the preparation of future generations to contribute meaningfully to international cooperation.
The WIMUN Legacy
WIMUN New York 2026 demonstrated once more the transformative power of experiential diplomacy education. Through procedures aligned with real UN practice, participants strengthened their negotiation skills, deepened their understanding of global governance, and forged cross-cultural connections that extend far beyond the conference week.
As previously announced, WIMUN will continue under its new name, Global Model UN, aligning the programme with WFUNA’s expanding portfolio, including Global Model WHO and Global Model FAO.
As the largest conference held under the WIMUN name, this edition reflects the extraordinary growth of the programme and its lasting impact on a global generation of future leaders. While the name evolves, the foundation remains unchanged: authenticity, diplomatic rigor, and meaningful engagement with the United Nations system.
WIMUN New York 2026 stands as both a milestone and a springboard — reinforcing the strength of the platform and its continued advancement under the Global Model framework.
