New York, NY — At the Closing Ceremony of WIMUN New York 2026, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) officially unveiled a transformative new chapter in its Model UN programming: the launch of Global Model United Nations (Global Model UN) — formerly known as WIMUN.
The announcement marked an important moment in WFUNA’s history, signaling both continuity and evolution in its commitment to the most authentic, UN-aligned multilateral simulation.
Revealed for the first time before more than 1,700 participants coming from 73 countries, the launch of Global Model reflects WFUNA’s strategic expansion and alignment of its growing conference portfolio.
From WIMUN to Global Model UN
For over a decade, WIMUN has set a global benchmark for the most realistic and substantive Model UN simulations grounded in authentic United Nations procedures.
With the introduction of Global Model UN, WFUNA consolidates and strengthens its flagship simulation under a unified identity that better reflects its global reach, institutional partnerships, and future ambitions.
Global Model UN builds upon the legacy of WIMUN — preserving its core pillars of authenticity, consensus-building, and diplomatic rigor — while positioning the programme within a broader ecosystem of UN-focused simulations.
A Unified Global Model Ecosystem
The launch of Global Model UN also marks a strategic alignment with WFUNA’s expanding conference offerings, including:
- Global Model WHO
- Global Model FAO (recently announced)
Together, these initiatives form an integrated Global Model platform — designed to provide specialized, institutionally aligned simulations across key UN agencies and bodies.
By bringing these conferences under a cohesive framework, WFUNA strengthens its ability to:
- Deepen substantive engagement with UN systems
- Expand academic and institutional partnerships
- Enhance participant pathways across different UN-focused simulations
- Deliver consistent excellence in diplomacy education
This evolution reflects WFUNA’s long-term vision of building a comprehensive global ecosystem for experiential multilateral learning.
Announced at a Historic Moment
The unveiling of Global Model UN at the WIMUN NY 2026 Closing Ceremony symbolized both an ending and a beginning.
As the final conference under the WIMUN name concluded, delegates witnessed the formal transition to Global Model — honouring the legacy that brought the conference to global prominence while embracing a forward-looking identity that reflects its scale, sophistication, and expanding scope.
WFUNA Secretary-General Mr. Aziel-Philippos Goulandris emphasized during the ceremony that this evolution is not a departure, but a strengthening — reaffirming WFUNA’s commitment to authenticity, institutional collaboration, and empowering future leaders of multilateralism.
