OCTOBER 24, 2024—WFUNA’s Secretary General, Aziel Philippos Goulandris, has issued the following statement on the occasion of UN Day 2024.
The World Federation of United Nations Associations, established in 1946, with a membership of over 100 UNAs and thousands of constituents, commemorates the ratification of the United Nations Charter, which occurred on October 24, 1945.
Today, we join UN supporters from all corners of the globe in celebrating United Nations Day, a moment to reflect on the progress we have made and recommit ourselves to the values and mission of the UN. This year’s theme, “Our Common Agenda: Transforming our World—the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” reminds us that we stand at a critical juncture. To this extent we hope that the landmark adoption of the “Pact for the Future” will deliver on the promise of a more effective, inclusive, networked multilateralism.
At WFUNA, we are inspired by the work of our global network of United Nations Associations, which play a vital role in raising awareness, mobilizing action, and fostering international cooperation. Together, we are driving progress in communities worldwide, empowering people to participate in sustainable development, and strengthening the connection between citizens and the UN.
This UN Day, I encourage all of us to reflect on our shared responsibilities and how we can contribute to transforming our world. Achieving the SDGs requires collective action, and every individual, organization, and government has a role to play in ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
As we celebrate the UN’s 79th anniversary, let us be inspired by the vision that led to its foundation. Let us strengthen our resolve to turn words into action and build a future where all people and our planet can thrive. Let us hold dear and defend the UN Charter’s affirmation that “We the peoples of the United Nations [are] determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war [and to] reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small”.
