Civil Society Dialogue with H.E. Mr. Pedro Comissário Afonso of Mozambique, President of the UN Security Council for March 2023

On March 3rd, 2023, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) convened at the United Nations Headquarters in New York for the forty sixth instalment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations.

The dialogue featured H.E. Mr. Pedro Comissário Afonso Permanent Representative of Mozambique to the UN. WFUNA’s Director of Geneva Office, Mr. Aziel Goulandris, moderated the briefing, and was attended by Civil Society representatives at UNHQ, while others viewed online through UN Web TV.

The event was broadcasted live on UN Web TV and promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.

Ambassador Comissário Afonso highlighted priorities in the programme of work for March, such as the aim to bring attention to the international community the importance of women in government, countering terrorism and combatting violent extremism, as well as utilizing international organizations and mechanisms to address these topics.

The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations on a wide range of questions relating to Ukraine, Myanmar, Colombia and Haiti, as well as topics such as Peace and Security and the relation to Youth and Women, Protection of Civilians, and Climate Change among other issues.
