Training Program at the UN: Vienna

Vienna, Austria

Role in the UN

The United Nations Office in Vienna (UNOV) helps facilitate international cooperation on a wide range of global issues. UN entities based in Vienna primarily deal with issues related to international security, non-proliferation, crime prevention, industrial development, and outer space activities. The focus is on maintaining peace, security, and sustainable development through various specialized agencies and programs. This makes Vienna a crucial center for multilateral diplomacy and global governance.

UNOV is home to: International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA).

History

UNOV was established on January 1, 1980, and was designed by Austrian architect Johann Staber, with sustainability in the forefront and great financial backing from the Austrian government. Vienna’s central location in Europe makes it a strategic point for bridging East and West, especially during the Cold War era when it was selected.

Cultural Experiences

Visiting Vienna is a harmonious blend of music and architecture. From the majestic halls of the Vienna State Opera to the historic melodies echoing through Mozart’s former residence, music permeates the city’s streets. Meanwhile, architectural wonders like Schönbrunn Palace and St. Stephen’s Cathedral stand as timeless symbols of Vienna’s grandeur and elegance. Along the way be sure to enjoy traditional Viennese restaurants, your first Wiener Schnitzel and a trip to a cozy coffeehouse.
