Social Protection Systems, Access to Public Services and Sustainable Infrastructure for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women and Girls

Cerina Lee, Secretary, Commission on the Status of Women

Committee Background

"The priority theme of the sixty-third session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women in 2019 is about the empowerment of women and girls through social protection systems and sustainable infrastructure. The empowerment of women is the foundation for human rights and gender equality as outlined by the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the Addis Ababa Action Agenda and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals.

This Council will explore the advancement of women and girls (highlighting those in rural settings) within a world of complex local and international barriers such as gender inequality, hunger, food insecurity, discrimination, violence against women, and access to quality work and education. Through the background work of the Commission of the Status of Women, we will be immersed in rich discussion surrounding the implementation of policies, public health initiatives and legal frameworks that foster women and girls to live a full, high quality of life."
