My first WIMUN Experience

Rose Camille Lopez

Being my first International Model United Nations conference, WIMUN was one of the most invaluable and incredible experiences I’ve had so far. Whilst I was originally assigned delegate of the United Arab Emirates, I was privileged to be elected by my peers around the world as Chair of the United Nations General Assembly. This was a fantastic opportunity for me to utilise my previous public speaking skills chairing Gold Coast City Junior Council Executive Committee meetings and my leadership experience as Mayor’s Student Ambassador. I further developed practical skills in both diplomacy and negotiation, as well as in writing and communication, which will help me in my future career.

Despite at first being nervous taking on a major role in chairing and facilitating the General Assembly, the workshops I had participated in, helped prepare me for my role. In the lead up to the conference, preparation was intense. I was privileged to participate in exclusive General Assembly Official Training from United Nations Department of Public Information staff, alongside hearing the former Under-Secretary-General and High Representative of the UN, His Excellency, Ambassador Chowdhury speak about our committee’s topic: Culture of Peace. After making my speech address at the Closing Plenary as Chair, the positive feedback and respect I received from the WIMUN Secretariat and fellow delegates, gave me confidence that I was successful in my role representing not only Bond University, but the world at large.

Our delegation was fortunate to meet with the UAE, Estonian, Australian, and Laos Mission to the UN, respectively, courtesy of Assistant Professor, Dr Mark Dinnen. Whilst my expectations had been fulfilled academically, what I didn’t realise was that I would gain even more out of the experience. I made genuine friendships with delegates from all around the world during the resolution drafting process. Apart from exploring the city, one of the best experiences during my time in New York, was when I had an opportunity to further foster these friendships at the University Social Event, which took place at Dave & Busters. Not only did I get to experience eating at an authentic New York diner with my newly found friends, but I had an awesome time playing at the arcade with people who were only strangers days before. I will forever cherish these memories and look back knowing that I made the most out of the experience Bond University had given me.
