On November 5th, the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) organized the twenty-first installment in a series of monthly dialogues between the President of the UN Security Council and Civil Society organizations at the United Nations Headquarters.
The dialogue featured H.E. Jonathan Allen, Deputy Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the UN, briefing civil society representatives on the United Kingdom's presidency of the Security Council for the month of November. WFUNA’s Peace and Security Officer, Mr. Pablo Angulo, moderated the briefing, which was attended by 20 participants from UN-accredited civil society organizations.
The event was broadcast live on UN Web TV with more than 350 viewers, and it was promoted on social media with the hashtag #MeetUNSCPres to allow for a participation from a global audience and wider stakeholder engagement.
Ambassador Allen shared the Council’s programme of work for the month of November. He spoke about the Open Debates scheduled for November, including a debate on Women, Peace and Security, and Peacebuilding and Sustaining Peace: The Role of Reconciliation in the Maintenance of International Peace and Security. Ambassador Allen also emphasized that the Security Council plans to address the ongoing issues in Yemen, Syria and Somalia at the upcoming briefings.
The floor was then opened for questions from representatives of civil society organizations on country specific questions relating to Myanmar, Cameroon, Xinjiang, Kashmir, Venezuela, Yemen and Syria, as well as topics such as Women, Peace and Security, Conflict Prevention and Sustaining Peace, and Nuclear Disarmament.
