Advancing SDG 16+ in 2019: Policy, Practice and Political Will

Advancing SDG 16+ in 2019: Policy, Practice and Political Will

THURSDAY, MARCH 14, 2019

New York, NY - On March 7th, the 16+ Forum convened the side-event, Advancing SDG 16+ in 2019: Policy, Practice and Political Will, featuring the Permanent Missions of Georgia, Sierra Leone and Timor-Leste. The event brought to the fore key take-aways from the 16+ Forum Annual Showcases against the backdrop of HLPF 2019, the SDG Summit and our collective efforts to advance SDG 16+.

With the inaugural Showcase held in Tbilisi in 2017, the second in Freetown in 2018 and the third to be held for Dili in the fall of 2019, Permanent Representatives shared their insights and perspectives on the Annual Showcase as a platform to highlight implementation and as a means by which to strengthen coordination, partnerships and complimentary agendas.

2019 is a pivotal year for the growing community of SDG 16+ champions. In less than 100 days, progress on SDG 16, along with SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Employment and Decent Work for All), SDG 10 (Reducing Inequalities), SDG 13 (Climate) and SDG 17 (Partnerships) will be reviewed through the Voluntary National Review Process at the High-level Political Forum (HLPF), presenting a critical opportunity to advance the practical implementation of SDG 16+ across all stakeholders and strengthen national commitment to the 2030 Agenda as a mutually reinforcing and indivisible whole, in 2019 and beyond.

Speakers:

  • H.E. Mr. Kaha Imnadze, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations
  • H.E. Ms. Victoria Sulimani, Deputy Permanent Representative of Sierra Leone to the United Nations
  • H.E. Mrs. Maria Helena Pires, Permanent Representative of Timor-Leste to the United Nations
  • Mr. Bonian Golmohammadi, Secretary-General, World Federation of UN Associations & the 16+ Forum (Moderator)
