On the sidelines of the 55th Commission for Social Development, we participated in a side-event titled “The UN Youth Delegate Programme: An Opportunity for Youth Engagement in the UN” organized by the UN Programme on Youth. The event had the objective of informing member states of the Youth Delegate Programme as a youth participation mechanism at the UN and invite them to include young people in thier delegations to the UN General Assembly and other UN bodies.

The side-event started with an overview of the work of the UN Programme on Youth by Nicola ShepherdMarissa StorozumYouth Delegate Coordinator, gave an overview of the how the Programme works and then introduced Zuzana VuováYouth Delegate from the Czech Republic, who talked about of how the Programme was established in Czech Republic and how it is currently funded. Mohamed GhediraYouth Delegate from Tunisia, then introduced how the Tunisian Youth Delegates are selected and their work at the national level. Afterwards, Yaron OpenheimmerFirst Secretary from the Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the UN, provided the member state perspective by reflecting on the rationale for countries to include youth delegates in national delegations.

WFUNA Secretary-General Bonian Golmohammadi explained WFUNA’s role in working to strengthen youth participation at the UN and expand the Youth Delegate Programme around the world. Finally, Penny MortonFirst Secretary for the Mission of Australia to the UN, explained the work of Youth Delegates when they arrive in New York City.
